An exploration of private and public spaces.

Kenmare

The owner of the live + work apartment and retail store is a novelist who gains inspiration for his characters through observation of the people within his neighborhood. He researches and writes in his home and manages the operations of the first level store front.

Through documenting the private interactions and habits of everyday people he creates fictional characters that mirror the various aspects of day to day city living.

The overall theme and concept for the building is centered around disrupting the notion of what is public and private space.

This is achieved by incorporating materials and blending the program of each floor that help to connect public and private practices and space into a more open and fluid experience.

Materials

concrete

CONCRETE

Concrete is a composite material composed of fine and coarse aggregate bonded together with a fluid cement that hardens over time. Most concretes used are lime-based concretes or concretes made with other hydraulic cements.

Concrete is one of the most durable building materials. It provides superior fire resistance and gains strength over time. Structures made of concrete can have a long service life.

brick

BRICK

A brick is building material used to make walls, pavements and other elements in masonry construction. Traditionally, the term brick referred to a unit composed of clay, but it is now used to denote any rectangular units laid in mortar.

A brick can be composed of clay-bearing soil, sand, and lime, or concrete materials. Bricks are produced in numerous classes, types, materials, and sizes which vary with region and time period, and are produced in bulk quanti- ties. Two basic categories of bricks are fired and non-fired bricks.

Fired bricks are one of the longest-lasting and strongest building materials, sometimes referred to as artificial stone, and have been used since circa 5000 BC.

wood

WOOD

Wood is a porous and fibrous structural tissue found in the stems and roots of trees and other woody plants. It is an organic material, a natural composite of cellulose fibers that are strong in tension and embedded in a matrix of lignin that resists compression.

People have used wood for thousands of years for many purposes, including as a fuel or as a construction material for making houses, tools, furniture, packaging, artworks, and paper. Known Constructions using wood date back ten thousand years. Buildings like the European Neolithic long house were made primarily of wood.

glass

GLASS

Glass is a non-crystalline amor- phous solid that is often transpar- ent and has widespread practical, technological, and decorative usage in, for example, window panes, tableware, and optoelec- tronics.

Color in glass may be obtained by addition of electrically charged ions that are homogeneously distributed, and by precipitation of finely dispersed particles.

BAMBOO

Bamboo, like true wood, is a natural composite material with a high strength-to-weight ratio useful for structures.

In its natural form, bamboo as a construction material is traditionally associated with the cultures of South Asia, East Asia, and the South Pacific, to some extent in Central and South America, and by extension in the aesthetic of Tiki culture.

Bamboo can be cut and laminated into sheets and planks. This process involves cutting stalks into thin strips, planing them flat, and boiling and drying the strips; they are then glued, pressed, and finished.

brass

BRASS

Brass is a metallic alloy that is made of copper and zinc. The proportions of zinc and copper can vary to create different types of brass alloys with varying mechanical and electrical properties.

Brass is used for decoration for its bright gold-like appearance for applications where low friction is required such as locks, gears, bearings, doorknobs, ammunition casings and valves.

Brass is often used in situations in which it is important that sparks not be struck, such as in fittings and tools used near flammable or explosive materials

iron

IRON

Iron is a chemical element with symbol Fe (from Latin: ferrum) and atomic number 26. It is a metal in the first transition series. It is by mass the most common element on Earth, forming much of Earth's outer and inner core. It is the fourth most common element in the Earth's crust.

Fresh iron surfaces appear lustrous silvery-gray, but oxidize in normal air to give hydrated iron oxides, commonly known as rust.

Iron became a major structural material following the building of the innovative first iron bridge in 1778. This bridge still stands today as a monument to the role iron played in the Industrial Revolution. Following this, iron was used in rails, boats, ships, aqueducts, and buildings.

greenery

GREENERY

Any foliage of a plant, either live, freshly cut, or artificial. The term is used in the landscaping, interior design, and floral industries.

LIVE + WORK APARTMENT

The live + work apartment will primarily be utilized for private programs such as sleeping, eating and bathing. The apartment will also feature a personal office for private research and writing.

Although the apartment is mainly servicing a private program, material elements, such as glass walls, provide transparency and visibility to the patrons of the public spaces such as the meeting room.

RETAIL BOOKSTORE

The ground floor of the site will be used for retail space and will house a bookstore. The space will encourage shopping with large bookcase displays throughout the space and will feature a small coffee shop nestled in the rear of the room.

It will also encourage performance and visibility with a large stage dedicated to live performance and when it is not in use it will serve as seating for those seeking to curl up with a book or enjoy a cup of coffee.

Although the bookstore is a public space, it will feature a design element in the bookcases that can create private sections of space within the shop. This designed privacy will simultaneously create additional accessibility points for the public.

Public Library

The roof-top floor will be utilized as a public library where local patrons can read books onsite, research or just enjoy the beauty of nature within the urban city.

The space will feature an outdoor park and  siting area, an enclosed space for book browsing, access to a meeting room and glass retainer wall facing Delancy Street.

Although the roof-top library is a public space, privacy can be gained by using the meeting room, and seating nooks within the enclosed space.
